70-300mm w/ TC-201 help

70-300mm w/ TC-201 help

Postby cnbarnwell on Tue Mar 03, 2009 1:08 am

I recently purchased a TC-201 for my manual focus 70-300mm Nikon lens. I know I have to set it to manual mode but I can't get the aperature right. My pictures are dark and can't get it to adjust correctly. Please help. Aperature only goes +/- 5. What do I do to get this to work? I am new to photography and on a D60. I need all the help I can get.

What is the exact model of the lens? Most likely, this lens is not compatible with the D60. A good resource is http://www.kenrockwell.com. Ken has extensive compatibility information for various lenses and bodies.

Good luck, and welcome to the Nikon Photographer Forum!

Lens is a Nikkor AF 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 G. I have had the lens for months now. Love it but wanted to better my chances of getting awesome pics of Aircraft because I can't afford a bigger lens at the moment. It all compatible but I can't get the exposure right. The only way I can view pics thru viewfinder is if I set shutter to like 15" or higher which will NOT work for Aircraft.

Specifications of Nikon Ai-S Teleconverter TC-201

Usable lenses: Virtually all MF Ai Nikkor lenses up to focal length of 200mm. Most AF lenses under similar range may also be used on Manual Focusing.
Lens construction: 7 elements in 5 groups; Focal length: Double that of the lens in use
Aperture coupling range: f/2-f/32; Effective aperture: f/4~f/64
Diaphragm: Automatic; Metering: Full-aperture exposure measurement with Ai type Nikkor lenses, includes Ai-S, Nikon Series-E and applicable AF Nikkor lenses; Depth of field: Half that of the lens in use

Closest focusing Distance: Same as that of the lens in use, remains unaffected
Dimensions: 64.5mm dia. x 52mm long (overall); 44mm extension from lens flange
Weight: 230g; Lens case: CL-30S hard leatherette, No. 61 soft pouch, CP-8 or CP-9 plastic

From what I can see, the TC-201 is compatible with lens 200mm or less while the TC-301 is compatible with lens 300mm or less. Also note that the teleconverter decrease the effective aperture of the primary lens by two f-stops. So if your lens is a Nikkor AF 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 G, then it becomes a Nikkor AF 140-600mm 1:6-8 G. This will thus produce under-exposed images unless you have VERY bright lighting. What does the exposure meter say when you try to take a shot? I would guess it is all the way to the right (-) indicating not enuf light to take a properly exposed shot.

This is the reason why long reach lens with F-stops of 2.8 cost a mint, because they give you the reach and the ability to capture more light at that reach. I'm afraid your setup will not work with high speed moving objects.
